Concept
I like the imagery of a model sitting comfortably in a suit as the focus, as the connotation is stability, however, this is juxtaposed with the theme of mental instability creating an accute sense of irony.
I will again be using the bag motif, but this time will try to encorporate the glaring and almost nausiating colours of Munch's "the scream", to add to the feeling of fear and panic.
The different between this shoot and my last is that I am influenced by the choice of model and positioning in Honaker's work, but replicating the techniques, style and colour adopted in the Scream are the main purpose of my shoot.
Timings
My photo will have to be at mid day, when the sky is bright and the sun is overhead. I want a bright image to easily saturate with colour when editing in photoshop.
Details
I will take my photo from multiple angles, but this time will have no pose for the model, as it is supposed to suggest an eerie sense of acceptance and preturbed sense of normality.
I will try to use clashing colours and create an effect not unlike in "the scream" as to have an almost hallucinagenic feeling. I will likely achieve this through photoshop
Equiptment
I will ensure that my camera is fully charged, and will try to use my tripod incase longer exposure times are needed to capture the light.
I will set the image in my garden as to have an outdoor scene, again, like in "The Scream" , but will have the model as similar to Honaker's, a man in a suit sitting down.
I will obviously have to find a suit for the model.
Ideas
I will attempt to use photo shop to create the swirling background effect as in "The Scream" , but keep my model much the same, with maybe only changes to the colour in the model. I hope to create an unsettling image to stress the unnerving nature of mental illness.
Results
I decided to take this image on. I felt that the camera angle in this image, being so that the model seems almost to be towering over the image, gave a more unsettling effect. The bright light creating soft shadows that creae a good contrast on either side of the figure.
As with all images in this shoot, it had the following settings:
ISO : 1600
Av : 22
Tv : 1/160
Then I edited the curves to make the dark areas more pronounced and colours more intense, to further icnrease contrast. This would add to the nausiating effect of bright intense colours that are incredibly pronounced.
After this I utilised the'hue/saturation' tool to change the sky to red, which also turned the figures hands red. I was unsure weather to keep this, as it did add to the effect of mental illness being unnatural and disturbing sense of reality.
However, in "The Scream" , the skin of the subject was a sickly yellow colour. I decided that I would try to recreate the yellowish skin, as the green looks too garish and out of place, which was not my intention. The intensity of the green also seemed to distract somewhat from the image, which was not ideal.
As a result I edited the model, by selecting him out of the background and creating it as another layer, and then changing the hue again to give him yellow skin.
I then used the liquify tool to blend the background and swirl it into the almost molten , swirling effect in the background of "The Scream".
The Husband
i have settled on this image, as the effect is rather striking and expresses my intended message. The bag motif is again present, representing loss of identity, almost asphyxiating the subject, wrapped tightly around their face and neck. The background is a vibrant red with all detail lost in a swirling motion, representing the fear and loss of contact with normality. The reality around the subject is warped and almost moving, showing just how warped reality has become for the subject.
I have decided to name this image : The Husband, the wedding band clearly visible on the finger in this image again. This is the aforementioned 'twin' image to 'The Bride'.
