I have decided to attempt to create an image similar to this one by Andreas Poupoutsis. It portrays my theme well and is even titled 'hidden identity', I came upon this image when searching for inspiration on Pinterest.com and like the way that it portrays expression on the model's face but still obscures the face. It allows for a more powerful expression of emotion on the model's face than in my other images, where little of the face is visible.
I am fascinated with the bag motif I found in Honaker and Magritte's work and so have decided to carry it on.
Timings
Timing is not as crucial in this image. I just need a good light source to illuminate the face of the model.
Details
I will again ask a family member to act as my model.
I will use a well lit room with a plain backdrop. The cover on the face will need to be thin, so I may use tights or another thin covering material.
I may use photoshop to edit lighting further online, as well as colour balance
Equiptment
I will need to aquire the covering for the face, some plain clothes and a dull backdrop. Other than that I will simply be using my camera and photoshop, As always, I will ensure my camera is fully charged.
All of these images were taken using the following settings:
ISO : 400
Av : 4.0
Tv : 1/25
I decided to use mutliple different poses and and hand actions to experiment how differently they would effect the final outcome of the image. Initially I took some shots of the model posing static with a pained expression. However, I soon realised that these were too similar to the image by Andreas Poupoutsis, and so tried to make the image more my own, and unique. I feel that the results were very successful and all thta is required is some editing on photoshop.
I decided to carry on this image from the set as it some of the others looked to similar to other photos I had taken, but with a different covering on the face. With this imagge the emotion was clear, with the panic shown on the model's face and the grasping at the mask as if to pull it off.
I took to photoshop and shifted the image to black and white, and then edited the curves to get a heavy black effect and create thicker shadows.
I then furthered this effect by using one of the filters on Wix when editing the photo (shown later) , which made this effect more exaggerated with thick darkeness and hard shadows covering the image, the final result of this was very effective as it made the image seem more professional. On top of this it added to the idea of panic as the model is being enveloped in darkness.
I decided to refine this image as well as it creates the effect of asphyxiation. The model is gasping for air while they are trapped 'beneath the surface'. I feel that the expression on the model in this image clearly set it apart from the others in the shoot.
I then (again) set it to black and white and edited th curves.
This time, I used the wix filter 'singe' to create a browny effect, like that of old pictures, as I felt the image looked somewhat like a picture from a victorian era asylum, with a disturbed patient.
Final Images (with wix filters)
I felt that this image was good at demonstrating the theme. The identity is quite obviously hidden beneath the venuer, however, the expression is clear on their face, as if they are gasping for air 'beneath' the mask.
This image matches my theme of hidden identity well and the use of a stockingette was a good design choice.
I feel that this was the more successful of the two. Mainly as from a visual standpoint it looks more professional. Again, the identity is well concealed but the expression is clear, as they fight to escape from 'beneath the surface'.The thick shadows and clutching at the face creates a strong sense of panic, in this context panic at the idea of their identity being stripped away.
If I have to choose an image to take on, this would be it as it has best demonstrated my theme.
Breathe
This image fit my theme well by vividly portraying the psychosis and extreme panic felt by many who suffer on a daily basis. The NHS described a panic attack as giving "an overhwelming sense of doom". I tried to express this in my image through manic actions and expression. The model is clutching at her face trying to remove the cover, screaming underneath, fighting to get free ; 'Beneath thesurface'.
The image links back to my breif research on the expressionist movement, and more speifically, again, Munch. His use of gestures and actions heavily influenced my work and inspired me to have a heavier focus on more purposeful positioning and gestures from models.
